Some of the things I write about here on the blog are things I’m personally keeping an eye out for (i.e., fashion week)… some are interesting things I pluck from the seemingly never-ending flow of events and information filtering through my business/publication Cincy Chic … and now that I started the blog, people are contacting me to let me know about more “newsy” things that are a better “instant gratification” fit for a blog and not a weekly publication like what Cincy Chic is.
So, I’m going to change the format of the blog a bit to accommodate this influx of info! I’m going to do shorter, more frequent (will try daily), less formal blogs. I have a Type-A personality, and I come from a formalized publishing background, so I have the tendency to want to create the perfect beginning, middle and end – and develop the prettiest corresponding graphics. Well, all that will change moving forward, my friends!
So, today’s blog is about the Krombholz Jeweler’s annual Sample Sale. When Lee, the owner, told me about it at first I thought, oh cool, they’re discounting some stuff. Neat, but everyone has sales.
But then he said this is the motherload of all their sales. And it’s their clients’ favorite event (it’s their biggest sale of the year, in fact) because they talk all their vendors into selling them the samples of the outgoing season’s lines super cheap. Krombholz then sells them super cheap to their customers during this sale. So it’s like getting a great deal on a year-end model of a car! But pretty jewelry instead : )
Lee said everything else in their cases will be marked down 25-75% off regular price, too. So, if you’re in the market for a special keepsake for someone special or want to have a bling fling for yourself, I recommend checking this sale out.
Oh and we’re working on a really special event (called Night in White) on April 9 with Krombholz and Locals on Living to raise money for a local nursing scholarship. The scholarship was started by a friend of mine who I used to work with and it’s very special to him and his family. So click here to learn more about that! Just thought I’d make mention of it since we’re on the topic of Krombholz! : )
His momma always told him she loved him more than big red ‘maters.
The fact Harold was higher on the hierarchy than tomatoes really stuck with him. So, when living off the land at his farm wasn’t paying the bills, he decided to try something new… fashion.
That’s right. This man… who’s old enough to be my father… who lives on a farm… decided to break into the fashion industry. And in my opinion, he succeeded.
Here’s what he does. He takes old t-shirts, tears them up, twists, twirls, braids, embellishes (with silver pendants you can slide on and off the scarf threads) and knots them up into scarves. Cute, adorable, fashion-forward scarves that can dress up a tee and jeans, take a work outfit into night, or just add some fun flare to a casual out-and-about outfit. In homage to his mother, he named his company “Big Red ‘Mater.”
I found his scarves at Sara Benjamin’s (in Mariemont) today and I fell in love. Apparently, Harold walked into the store a short while ago and told his story to the owners and they immediately fell in love with him and his products.
The owners said he was super genuine – explained him as a soft natured grandfather with a California vibe. How could you say no to that?
I don’t know where else you can get a Big Red ‘Mader scarf. But I do know you can get them at the ever-fabulous Sara Benjamin’s. (Random confession: I just bought my third cocktail dress in two years there… all of which have been at least 60% off! Sweet!)
I was too focused on buying a dress for a masquerade event I’m going to tomorrow that I didn’t buy a scarf, but I fully plan on going back and buying one. You have to be in the right mood to buy certain things. I was in dress mode… but I did appreciate how fantastic these scarves were. I hope you do, too.
Consider yourself lucky, ladies. One of the hottest fashion items right now are as inexpensive as $5. That’s right… drop by your local H&M, Forever21 or online store and refresh your wardrobe with some fun tights and stockings. It’s all you need this winter to give your look an on-trend flare of fashion.
Pair them with over-the-knee boots for a peek-a-boo effect, or show off your colorful gams by pairing them with ankle boots or ballet flats. These versatile tights of any color or pattern can be worn under a long top, long sweatshirt, sweater dress, or mini skirt.
My favorite print tights (top photo) draw in the floral trend with sophistication. While other stockings are just plain fun and flirty. Here are some do’s and don’ts for keeping it tight(s).
Don’t wear tights with a top that does not cover your rear. Tights are not a replacement for pants, but an accessory to spice up your outfit.
Don’t wear more then one pattern. Don’t let things get too busy. When wearing patterned tights you will want to wear a solid colored top.
Don’t wear a tight top with your tights. By wearing a more flowing top, it will keep your legs looking lean and long.
Do keep your outfit balanced. Color matching your shoes and top well help everything to stay balanced.
Do wear a solid top when wearing patterned or printed tights. Don’t overdo it with the patterns and colors or you will soon find yourself back in the 80’s.
Do stick with solid-colored shoes, and go for a head to toe, monochromatic color scheme if you’re going to mix lots of patterns and textures.
Do layer. Layering is the key to pulling off this seasons hottest new fashion tights styles. These key items will help you to accessorize and add to this new style:
* Sweater Dresses
* Banded Shirts
* High Heeled Ankle Boots
* Knee High Boots
* Thigh High Boots
* Ballet Flats
There are several great places to stock up on stockings. I recently got some great solids in fun colors and prints at H&M. Other places to check out are Stockingirl.com, GreatStyleDeals.com and (where all the photos in this post came from) TheUpFactory.com.
(Helpful hint: The Up Factory is a French company, so if you want to read their web site, go to http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ and put TheUpFactory.com in the “translate a web page” field.)
Christmas gifts have all been unwrapped, holiday parties are all out of egg nog and J-Lo’s tragic cat suit rang in the new year. But there’s still lots of merchandise on the racks at local boutiques that didn’t end up under a tree, mistletoe or dropping ball.
So, all the local shops are getting together and cutting prices to move this merchandise while it’s hot and on-trend! It’s a rare opportunity to get decked out in designer wear at a fraction of the cost.
Last year at the sale, I got this red dress that I wore to our first annual Lady in Red party (the second annual one is coming up on Feb. 5 FYI), this brown dress, and these boots at the sale! (red dress from Sara Benjamins, brown dress from Suki, and boots from Morrison & Me)
Mark your calendars! It’s Jan. 29-31. They’re keeping the location under wraps until right before the event. So, stay tuned to their Web site where you can learn more about the times, the special happy hour they’re doing this year, and all the boutiques involved!

As you learned in my last blog, my husband and I were in LA last week so he could do a performance with Nancy Cartwright of Bart Simpson fame.
Sure, I could talk about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity it was to be a dinner guest at Nancy’s home and to see my husband perform up on stage with Hollywood’s finest. But on the other hand, I could talk about the $500 boots I got for FREE at Nordstrom in LA.
I will talk about Nancy in a future blog (and share pics!), but I need to give my fellow shop-o-holics the excuse you need to go to LA and shop.
So, as you can imagine, it’s warm in LA right now. Actually, it was borderline hot a couple of the days we were out there. The day Cincinnati got several inches of snow? Yeah, I was lounging by a pool.
How does this relate to free boots at Nordstrom? Well, I discovered that the supply and demand for winter clothes and shoes in LA isn’t what it is in Cincinnati. Anything pseudo wintery was marked waaaay down. It was unbelievable. So, I dashed over to their boot rack and found some incredible over-the-knee black suede boots. Originally $500, marked down to $60-something dollars! I had a $100 gift card my co-workers got me for my birthday (I’ve been a good girl … I’ve waited since June to use it!). So, I got the boots, flip flops (which were ironically full price), and suede protectant spray with my gift card. Thus, free! : )
I have since worn them twice, and I’m wearing them today! They are so comfortable and practical! They keep my legs so warm! I took a page out of the Kasmira book of tricks and wore colorful leggings with the boots so just a little pop of color peeks through the top of the boot and the bottom of my dress.
So, a word to the frugal fashionitas out there, take a trip to LA in the dead of winter and stock up on all your winter wear. You’ll pay for the trip with all your savings. At least that’s how I rationalized it every time I swiped my credit card! : )
This month has been one for the records. It all started two weeks ago when, on my morning jog, I was literally hit by a pick-up truck. The driver didn’t see me when I crossed the street – luckily only resulting in some bumps and bruises. A week later, our upstairs toilet malfunctioned, overflowed, kept running and poured water throughout three stories of our home while we slept. We are now in the process of tearing out one bathroom and repairing the other two floors (yay home ownership). And the third in this terrific trifecta happened last week when my Grandma took a serious tumble and is now left with two black eyes – what she is affectionately calling her “broken face.”
But, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’m trying to see the positive in all of this. The truck incident will make me more aware of my surroundings when I run (and look both ways 18 times before crossing!), the bathroom issue is actually resulting in a brand new bathroom (we were planning to repair anyway) on our insurance’s dime, and the third gave me the excuse to bring my Grandma lunch today to make her feel better.
Someone once told me “You can tell a lot about a person by the way they handle three things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights” and it’s so true. While none of those things happened to me, I experienced my own variation. And now, instead of being sad they happened, I’m actually…. thankful.
I have another thing to be thankful for, too. I’m officially “Aunt Amy”! My brother and his wife, Erin, had a beautiful baby girl named Sara Paige last Monday night. She’s beautiful and perfect and I love her so much already.
Maybe the new addition to the family got me in the giving spirit, or maybe I just love shopping, but I’m almost completely done with my holiday shopping! I wish I could tell you what I purchased, but my friends and family frequent this blog too much for me to not let the cat out of the bag.
All I’m going to say is that I’m completely in love with Stop Traffick Fashion. A local woman (with a fabulous fashion sense) started an online shopping site where you can get the latest and greatest handbags, jewelry and skin care, and proceeds benefit victims of human trafficking.
Click here to check out an upcoming shopping event they’re having at The McAlpin downtown on 4th St on Dec. 5. She has some gorgeous products, and they look even better in person, so I highly recommend you come to this event!
But there’s lots of goodies to gobble up in the meantime with all the price-slashing going on this Friday! Below are my top picks for the Tri-State’s best Black Friday Sales!

Forget the Frizz, Treat Your Sweet Self to Keratin Complex
From humid summers to brittle cold winters, Cincinnati’s weather can wreak havoc on hair. Especially if you have hair like mine with a little curl that you have to straight-iron out every day. For it, I recommend Keratin Complex by Coppola. It cuts down up to 95% of frizz and curl leaving the hair smooth and shiny.
It’s on special right now for $225 at Bella Rey Salon. I know you’re probably thinking that’s a lot to smooth out your hair, but the price includes the treatment service, haircut, full size bottle of Coppola Shampoo and your first blow out. The product needs 72 hours to set-in, so after those three days, come back and Bella Rey Salon will shampoo, condition, deep condition and blow it out for you! (That’s about $115 in free services with the treatment!)
The air is crisp and the trees are turning colors, which means it’s officially time to break out that Fall wardrobe! Visit Eddie Lane’s Diamond Showroom for their glorious gemstone jewelry in countless colors to accessorize all of your fabulous Fall fashions.
But diamonds are always in fashion. Eddie Lane’s Diamond Showroom has been a top supplier to the Cincinnati area for over 30 years at unbeatable prices! Peruse their close out case for even better deals!
And while you’re there, check out their Zable beads which are compatible with similar brands *cough cough, Trollbeads* at more affordable prices. Their Fall shipment has arrived and is going fast! Hurry in to see their great selection for the perfect holiday gift for family and friends. (FYI – Zable beads are only available at the West Chester location)
I’ve got a fever and the only perscription is retail therapy.
That’s what I posted to my Facebook page this morning because the past two weeks have been busy, stressful and sleep-deprived, so I thought I’d treat myself to a short little visit to the mall. And some friends – who obviously know me and my savvy sale shopper ways – responded to my message on Facebook with various sales all over the city I need to check out. I thought I’d post a new blog to share the good news in case you’re out getting in a little retail therapy this weekend, too!
Shoetopia announced that it will be closing its Northside retail store at the end of October. To clear the shelves, Jessica (the owner), is offering some huge discounts. Here’s a message she just posted to the Shoetopia Facebook Fan Page: “J-41 and Tsubo Fall shoes are now 25% off, Faryl Robin shoes are $100 off, and all summer shoes are 70% off.”
And just six hours ago, she posted this: “Wow, you are all so amazing! We’re almost out of Tsubo’s and J-41’s after only 2 days! It’s been so busy that I haven’t been able to keep our website updated, so if you want to know if your size is still here just stop in, we’ll be here all day until 8pm.”
So, all my sole sistas out there better hurry while the gettin’s good.
It’s jean season again, ladies, so stock up with Forever 21’s newly released $9.50 denim.
I used to loathe this store, so I understand if you’re questioning my sanity for shopping at Forever 21. It’s crowded, unorganized, the clothes are cheaply made, don’t last long, aren’t made for girls with curves and and their return policy stinks.
That being said, I consistently get compliments whenever I wear something from Forever 21. I used to think it was just for teeny-boppers, but I’ve actually found some of my favorite clothes – for work and play – at Forever 21. Plus I’ve found some things absolutely identical to items I’ve seen at Saks, Nordstrom and even Cabi parties. Sure, they won’t last as long as the expensive designer versions, but do fashion fads ever last that long anyway?
ADIDAS All Day IDream About Sales… That’s probably not what Adidas really means, but this weekend it does! The annual Adidas Tent Sale is taking place at the Turfway parking lot now through October 12 with blowout prices up to 75% off! Hours: Friday-Sunday: 9am to 7pm. Monday: 9am to 5pm.
The Little Luxury Shop
While I’ve never personally shopped at The Little Luxury Shop, it is based here locally, I do see it advertised everywhere and I’m on their mailing list. I just got an e-mail saying they’re doing 35% off right now if you use the code “luxury35” and that’s good until Oct. 31. The Web site says it’s a bikini and dress boutique. Their Little Black Dress section has some super cute stuff in it and some of their handbags are pretty yummy too.
Your Sale is in the Tote Bag The Wardrobe in Madeira started “Tote Bag Tuesday” this month. Here’s the deal: Buy a $3 reusable tote bag and get 10% off your entire purchase. It’s only on the first Tuesday of every month, so mark your calendar for Nov. 3.
And on that bag-related note, also mark your calendar for November 27. It’s the annual “Holidays in the Bag” at the Gateway Quarter (aka Over-the-Rhine) retailers. Participating stores will offer 20% off everything customers can fit into a special Gateway Quarter shopping bag from 9am-9pm! Proceeds benefit the Emanuel Community Center. Pick up your bag at the corner of 12th and Vine Streets and spend the day shopping for gifts in the one-of-a-kind, locally owned stores that line the Gateway Quarter.
“Cheap” and “Chic.” Oxymorons, right? Not here on Chic This Week! A recent reader’s comment on my blog prompted me to start a monthly “Cheap Chic” post to show you how to have a fab, but frugal, lifestyle here in the Tri-State. Just because it’s chic does NOT mean it’s expensive.
Not to go into too many details – but just so you know where I’m coming from – I am the daughter of a hard-working secretary and teacher. We didn’t have much money at all. But my parents were very smart with what little money they did make, and – regardless if it was prunes or a prom dress – my mom always did her homework before she made any purchase. Even though some of her tactics were a little over the line (making me order 12-and-under meals when I was clearly old enough to drive), I still carry many of her money-saving mantras with me today.
So, this post will be one of many future public service announcements to all you recessionistas out there. I have four fantastic Cheap Chic Labor Day sales you need to check out!
*Cannot be combined with other offers, expires September 30, 2009. Valid Tues-Thurs only

Fun side note about Tuscany: The Cincy Chic staff and I had a makeover party there in the beginning of the year and it was so much fun! We spent the whole morning there – started with muffins and mimosas – and we got hair, skin and nail treatments. It was a great time because they’re well-equipped for a large crowd. Just an FYI if you have a group of gals and you want to have a pamper party!
