We all have that super cool, fun, creative friend who we go to when we need a little artsy inspiration for a project …or just a good laugh. For me, that girl is Kristen Folzenlogen, the owner of Poeme in Hyde Park.
I don’t get to hang out with her nearly enough, but I love being around her. She always knows about some new hip company starting up or new product line… and I love visiting her store. She always has kitschy little gifts, the funniest cards, oh, and the BEST window displays. Kristen actually helped me design the Cincy Chic window display at our office in the Gateway Quarter!
A while back, Kristen told me about this new company called 1154 Lill Studio, which makes custom cloth handbags. We did a story on them a few months ago, and our readers loved it. So, when I got an email from Kristen and Poeme about Lill Studio having a sale at Poeme, I thought I’d tell you about it! Especially since there’s a 10% off coupon! Mother’s Day is coming up!
There are two theories when it comes to sunglasses:
1) Buy expensive ones so you are more careful to not break or lose them
2) Buy cheap ones because they will inevitably get broken or lost
I started out subscribing to theory #2 because, frankly, I didn’t have the financial ability to do otherwise. After college, I gave #1 a try and I admit it worked. Unfortunately, I moved six times in six years and my first splurgy shades got lost somewhere in the mix. I was so mad at myself for losing them, I went back to the #2 theory.
But last week, I broke my cheapo pair of sunglasses. And I lost the few cheapos I had before it, so I’m back to square one… or two… can’t decide which theory. But I know I need some shades asap because that thing called “sun” we haven’t seen for ages is actually coming out a little more often and my baby blues need some protection.
So, I’ve been doing some research. On the cheap side, Forever21 wins without a doubt. Most pairs go for $5.80 and are super stylish. They probably wont last long, but if you’re going to lose or break them any way, who cares.
While researching the expensive side, I did find a fun line called Killture. I don’t think I could ever pull off something like this. Very few people could, but Lady Gaga is one of them.
If you have a taste for swanky shades, but have an aversion to wearing studs near your eyeballs, there’s a designer eyewear trunk show in West Chester coming up soon you might want to check out. Here are the deets:
Monday, March 22, 4:30 – 7:30pm
Cincinnati EyeCare Team
Union Centre Blvd Location
8629 N. Pavillion Dr.
West Chester, OH 45069
Designer Trunk Show featuring Prada, Dolce & Gabbana & Ray-Ban. Eyewear vendors will have their full selection of eyewear on hand to try on and purchase. Special discounts up to 20% off. You will also be able to register to win a free pair of sunglasses at the event.
I’ve never been to this shop before, but my cousin just opened a wine bar (The Wise Owl) right near there. So I might stop in there for a glass of liquid courage to go back to my theory #1 ways.
Ladies! Father’s Day is right around the corner! And I just found out about a cool way to recognize the fab father figure in your life.
Saks Fifth Avenue is looking for Cincinnati dads who are making a positive impact through their style, generosity and dedication to their families and communities. Winners will be honored at a Father’s Day ceremony, recognized in Saks Fifth Avenue Cincinnati windows, and rewarded with a complete look from the Saks Fifth Avenue Men’s Collection.
Some of my favorite ladies in the bridal biz are hosting a fun little trunk show this weekend at their studio (The Bridal Studio) in Covington.
I’ve done a couple blogs with Nancy from Brideface at the Studio. And whenever I go to see her, I always notice all the cute accessories in the shop. Great necklaces, pins and hair pieces. They also have funny cards and kitschy gifts.
Don’t let the name “The Bridal Studio” fool you. Not all their stuff is bridal. In fact, a lot of their cards, gifts and accessories can be used, worn or given for any occasion.
Sorry, got sidetracked… ah, yes, trunk show… they are having a trunk show this weekend. They’re calling it the “‘Finishing Touches’ Trunk Show.” It’ll take place this Sunday from 12-4pm at 610 Main St Covington KY. They invited all their favorite Bridal Studio accessory designers to show you what’s hot for spring and talk about the latest trends. The trunk show will feature T Beads, Oskar Simone and Pin Me Up Couture (wrote about Pin Me Up Couture in a previous blog here). Also, hairstylist Jen Nally will also be on hand for quick updo ideas with hair flowers and birdcage veils.
Again, you don’t have to be a bride-to-be to come to the show. I will be going to check out their jewelry and funky hair pieces. I just love how flower pins and feather headbands look in short hair!
I asked April from Bluebird Photography (another one of the Studio owners) to send some pics so you could see the shop and some of the items that will be featured at this weekend’s show! Enjoy!
At Cincy Chic, we do these things called “Chic Scoop” emails that feature five sales that our clients are having. We just sent one out yesterday, and this month’s theme was “spring sales.” Here are two fashion-related sales from the e-mail I think you’ll be interested in! I’m giving you the abridged version because the text from the email sounds so corporate! Oh, and I gave links so you can see the boutiques’ clothes in action at our previous fashion shows!

Sara Benjamin’s in Mariemont is having a big friends & family sale today!
As my blog readers, I consider you my virtual friends and therefore you’re now Sara Benjamin’s friends (I love rationalizing my way into a reason to shop!). : )
Here are the details:
Weds, March 10th ONLY! 10am ~ 8pm
6810 Wooster Pike, Cincinnati Oh 45227
Receive 30% off your entire purchase! (sale items included!)
Sara Benjamin’s is one of my FAVORITE places to shop in town for cocktail dresses. I’ve purchased my three favorite cocktail chic outfits at this boutique and I can’t wait to check out their sale today to see if I can find a fourth! I have the Night in White event to buy a dress for, after all! (there I go… rationalizing my way into shopping again!)
This is why I love having a blog. Last week, we had our wedding issue on Cincy Chic. And literally three days after we publish it, I get an email about a big bridal jewelry show at Richter & Phillips!
Normally, I’d just shrug my shoulders and say “oh well… we missed the boat on that news!” But now I’m able to still get the news out about it! YAY!
I’m just going to attach the email I got about the sale below. Looks like they’re going to have reps from all their big bridal jewelry lines there to answer any questions you might have. It’s a big investment (my husband reminds me of that regularly – haha!) so it’s good to get answers straight from the source!
UPDATE: Since posting the blog, the marketing manager at Richter & Phillips emailed me the following additional information, which I think is good to know:
-interest free financing for qualified buyers
-best prices of the bridal season
-Free Gents Wedding band ($500 value) with the purchase of an engagement ring
and diamond (minimum purchase $3000) offer good at the event only!
The Wardrobe, which has always been a cute high-end women’s clothing boutique in Madeira, is spreading its wings to introduce a new men’s collection for Spring. The shop is officially launching this expansion at a benefit event that sounds pretty cool. The owner, Lesley Hern, has an eye for good designers and chooses more cutting edge looks than most other boutiques in Cincinnati, so I’m excited to see what she chooses for the manly additions to her store!
On March 12, at Voltage in Oakley, enjoy a free happy hour provided by Hugo, and a fashion show at 8pm. A suggested donation of $10 will benefit Starfire.
“Rocker Chic” …Normally I wouldn’t think these things could coexist, but Amy, the owner of Soho Boutique in Hyde Park, changed my mind.
In November we did a holiday shopping/spring forecasting lunch ‘n’ learn where we brought in Amy, Richter & Phillips and Missy & Jack to talk about the trends. One of the trends Amy mentioned was this rocker chic.
I love to give trends a try, but I’m your average blonde haired, blue eyed American girl, so I can’t exactly pull off spikes and mohawks. Well, Amy explained how to sprinkle in a little rocker onto your chic with these “B-Low the Belt” brand belts.
They’re super skinny and studded. They come in all different colors (my favorite is the turquoise and gold, above).
They are on the pricey side ($80-$100), but every once in a while Soho will have a good sale. None that I know of coming up right now, but I do know they post sale info to their Facebook fan page and send out info via email (go to their site shopsohoboutique.com to sign up for the newsletter).
I would have never thought to pair a studded belt with this ruffled cocktail dress (left), but it gives it a completely new look. And I need this sweater/dress/belt combo (below). It’s suitable for work, but it also looks super cozy and comfy…. with a little rocker flare. Perfect!
UPDATE: As luck would have it… I just received an email from Soho boutique announcing new Sunday hours and a sale for THIS SATURDAY (March 5). See below captured image from the email for more info on sale amounts and hours. Enjoy!
Just got an email yesterday from my friend Cindy… subject line: Monkee’s of Madeira.
First thought: she misspelled spelled monkeys.
Second thought: why the heck are there monkeys in Madeira?
Opened up the email to find neither were true. Apparently this “Monkee’s of Madeira” is the name of Cincinnati’s newest clothing boutique! It’s located at 6928 Miami Ave. in Maderia next to Coffee Please. Near The Wardrobe.
Here’s what Cindy’s email said:
My good friend’s, daughter, Liz Hilberg, is opening a new womens clothing and accessory store in Maderia. You are going to LOVE this store! She is having a private friends and family party tonight, and I think the grand opening is Friday.
I’m out of town right now, but I’m looking forward to checking it out when I get back! You should too!
