Thanks, Giving and Getting Great Black Friday Deals

This month has been one for the records. It all started two weeks ago when, on my morning jog, I was literally hit by a pick-up truck. The driver didn’t see me when I crossed the street – luckily only resulting in some bumps and bruises. A week later, our upstairs toilet malfunctioned, overflowed, kept running and poured water throughout three stories of our home while we slept. We are now in the process of tearing out one bathroom and repairing the other two floors (yay home ownership). And the third in this terrific trifecta happened last week when my Grandma took a serious tumble and is now left with two black eyes – what she is affectionately calling her “broken face.”

Baby Sara Paige

But, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’m trying to see the positive in all of this. The truck incident will make me more aware of my surroundings when I run (and look both ways 18 times before crossing!), the bathroom issue is actually resulting in a brand new bathroom (we were planning to repair anyway) on our insurance’s dime, and the third gave me the excuse to bring my Grandma lunch today to make her feel better.

Someone once told me “You can tell a lot about a person by the way they handle three things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights” and it’s so true. While none of those things happened to me, I experienced my own variation. And now, instead of being sad they happened, I’m actually…. thankful.

I have another thing to be thankful for, too. I’m officially “Aunt Amy”! My brother and his wife, Erin, had a beautiful baby girl named Sara Paige last Monday night. She’s beautiful and perfect and I love her so much already.

Maybe the new addition to the family got me in the giving spirit, or maybe I just love shopping, but I’m almost completely done with my holiday shopping! I wish I could tell you what I purchased, but my friends and family frequent this blog too much for me to not let the cat out of the bag.

All I’m going to say is that I’m completely in love with Stop Traffick Fashion. A local woman (with a fabulous fashion sense) started an online shopping site where you can get the latest and greatest handbags, jewelry and skin care, and proceeds benefit victims of human trafficking.

Oh So Soho

Amy Maynard
Cincinnati's Couture Cutie, Amy Maynard, owner of Soho Boutique

I love it when I can get a taste of big-city life without leaving the comfort of my hometown. And every time I step into Soho Boutique in Hyde Park, I feel that way… from the off-the-beaten path boutique location and hand-painted stairs into the boutique, to the floor-to-ceiling gold encrusted mirror and daily changing floor displays. I absolutely love it.

Amy Maynard, the new owner of Soho, and I have become good friends since she purchased the boutique this summer. She is so friendly and down-to-earth, but the girl knows what she’s talking about when it comes to fashion. Especially fashion for the local lady (let’s be honest, not everything on the runway looks right at Skyline).

One of the best perks of her job is that she gets to write off her trips to Soho for “research and development.” (smart girl!) : ) She just got back from one of these trip to the Big Apple. That got my wheels turning on how my Cincy Chic readers can learn from experts like her. I came up with this concept where we can build off our popular lunch ‘n’ learn idea (where once a month we bring in one expert and invite our readers to enjoy lunch and learn about the topic for free), but this time bring in several experts from several industries to talk about trends in their specific niches.

So, on Nov. 20 from 12-1 at the Chamber of Commerce downtown (3rd floor of Carew Tower) we will have Amy from Soho Boutique talking about clothing trends, Rick Fehr from Richter & Phillips talking about jewelry and Rhonda from Missy & Jack talking about scarves and pashminas. From 1-2, there will be a trunk show where you can snag any of the items you just learned about! It’s free to attend and it includes a free boxed lunch. But we can only let the first 80 RSVPs in, so reserve your spot quickly! Send an e-mail to RSVP@cincychic.com or call (513) 721-2445 if you’re interested in attending! Hope to see you there! : )

Check out the video below where Amy from Soho gives you a sneak peek into a few of the biggest trends she’ll be talking about on Friday!

To Heaven in a Handbag

DeGroot Handbags
DeGroot Handbags Fall 2009 Collection

Handbags are the ultimate accessory in my book. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry because my bag is usually loud, large and in charge.

I also don’t like to change my handbag much. I find it time consuming and annoying. And I usually forget things like my wallet or lip gloss in the rushed bag change-over. So, the whole handbag debacle has been a thorn in my side for a while.

How can I find a bag that meets my form and function needs… and happens to look fabulous with everything?

Miche Bags are a good option. Especially their hobo style because I tend to lug everything but the kitchen sink with me in my bag. But even changing the shell is too much hassle for me.

But then I met Missy DeGroot. She’s beautiful, ambitious, talented, successful – but still Cincinnati’s best kept secret. She’s a local handbag designer who started her own company (DeGroot Handbags), designs all her own lines and manages relationships with retailers such as Kitson, Fred Segal, Saks and Bloomingdales to get her bags on their shelves.

I met her about a year ago and got a white Isis Tote. I wore it every day for a year and a half (yes, I snubbed the “don’t wear white in winter” rule, and it felt good!). To work, out with friends, on weekend getaways. That bag went everywhere, through everything with me. It carried computers, doggie treats, coffee mugs, water bottles, notebooks and champagne bottles.

I consistently got compliments on it. It went with everything. It was exactly what I needed. So, when it started to fray and look a little worn out, I gave Missy a call. She said I had perfect timing because she just got in her new collection. So, naturally, I told her to bring her wares to the office and I’d do a little blog on her!

Check out the video below to see my new white grommet hobo bag, learn about all the new colors/prints/styles she’s introducing with her new collection, and virtually meet the amazing Missy DeGroot!

12 Days of Seasonably Chic – Day 4

Paolo
My engagement ring

Women love getting compliments. And I have to tell you, I get compliments all the time on my engagement ring! It’s a custom design from Paolo, a Modern Jeweler up in Clifton. So, if you’d like to create something completely unique to you and get complimented on your exquisite taste, come meet Paolo at this Saturday’s Seasonably Chic Showcase!

One of the really cool things that Paolo likes to do is a “Jewelry Makeover.” So, you can take in a piece that’s sentimental to you (i.e., grandma’s brooch) and make it into a posh new asymmetrical necklace. A few of my friends have done this with some of their old jewelry and it’s a really affordable and fashionable way to revamp your jewelry collection.

Come visit Paolo’s table at the Seasonably Chic Showcase holiday shopping event, which will take place on Nov. 7 from 10am-3pm at the Phoenix Downtown. Watch the video below to learn more about Paolo, see some of their creations, and find out more about the Seasonably Chic Showcase!

12 Days of Seasonably Chic – Day 8

Paris J BoutiqueWe’re one week away from the Nov. 7 Seasonably Chic Showcase!!! Today’s sneak peek features Paris J Boutique, a brand new boutique in Old Montgomery. This boutique is located at 9797 Montgomery Rd. next to Carlo & Johnny, so you have to know where it is to find it. But it’s definitely worth finding!

Teresa the owner has impeccable taste and she loves the one-of-a-kind items that no one else in the city will have! I also like the variety of items she has in the store. I found everything from an eye-catching metallic embellished neck cocktail dress, to a cozy sweater and jeans. She also has beautiful bags, jewelry and the oh-so-hot-right-now-over-the-knee boots.

Paris J’s fashions will be featured in two fashion shows at the Seasonably Chic Showcase – one at 11:30am and one at 2:30pm. Go ahead and clear your calendar for the day because we’ll also have 30+ vendors to shop at and two “Brunch ‘n’ Learns” (Poeme’s Unique Gift Giving and Wrapping Tips at noon, and Sacksteder’s Interiors Holiday Decor Tips and Trends at 1pm). Hope to see you there!

12 Days of Seasonably Chic – Day 11

Ever had one of those days where there just aren’t enough hours to possibly complete everything? Yeah, that was my day yesterday. So, I’m sorry for the delayed “Day 11” of the “12 Days of Seasonably Chic.” But I know this one is worth the wait!

Today, I’m featuring Stop Traffick Fashion. STF was recently featured in the Enquirer and Cincy Chic and now you can see, touch – and buy! – all the great STF bags and jewelry at the Seasonably Chic Showcase on Nov. 7!

This business isn’t just another jewelry or handbag vendor. They are dedicated to making a unique difference in world. According to the STF site, Stop Traffick Fashion exists to:

  • Support the victims and survivors of human trafficking
  • Support the organizations who are rescuing and rehabilitating victims of trafficking
  • Raise awareness of human trafficking

This is one of my favorite local businesses, and I love that it was started by a local woman with such an international vision. Please take a look at her store and visit her at the Seasonably Chic Showcase on Nov. 7! (PS: she will also be featured in this Friday’s fashion show at Havana Martini Club if you’d like to see her fashions on the runway!)

12 Days of Seasonably Chic – Day 12

Seasonably Chic ShowcaseWe have a super awesome event coming up that I’m very excited about. It’s called the Seasonably Chic Showcase and it’s going to be the chicest holiday shopping event Cincinnati has ever seen!

It’s hosted by Cincy Chic and Locals on Living, so you know it’ll be fun and informative. The event will be on Nov. 7 from 10a-3p at The Phoenix, so mark it on your calendar. And plan to stay the whole time because we have two fashion shows and two brunch ‘n’ learns planned (Poeme’s Unique Gift Giving and Wrapping Tips at noon, and Sacksteder’s Interiors Holiday Decor Tips and Trends at 1pm).

But the big thing at the event will be all the shopping opportunities. We’re featuring 30 unique vendors so you can buy all your one-of-a-kind gift items for men, women and children on your list. Not only will everything be discounted, so you’ll save lots of money, but you’ll save time too not having to travel all over the city running around boutiques and malls trying to find the perfect gifts.

To give you an idea of some of the items featured at the vendors, one of our interns suggested that we do “12 Days of Seasonably Chic” videos to post on blogs and social media to highlight items that will be at the show. So, this video is the first of 12 that will appear each day until the event and it’s showcasing two items from Lavish Giving (LavishGiving.com), one of the vendors who will be at the event.

Body Bling

Body ArtStuds, sequins and spangled styles are all in this season. But what’s a girl to do when she needs just a bit more flair than her fashion options can offer? Rock your body! Your body art, that is.

Body Art was listed as one of the top trends for Spring 2010 by one of my favorite fashion blogs, “The Skinny.”

But, with any fashion trend forecast, the first time I see a new look, I think, “No way will that ever be in fashion.” But then it grows on me. And then I magically find one of every color in my closet one day.

That happened with leggings and skinny jeans, and I’m almost there with shoulder pads.

I’m not one to draw attention to my legs, so you probably won’t ever find me with a temporary Chanel tattoo plastered all over my legs (unless I made myself believe that the “CC” stood for Cincy Chic! haha). But I can see this becoming an actual trend. Think about it. It’s like having a tattoo you get to change your mind about, or change with the new trends. It’s a fashion-forward commitment-phobe’s dream come true!

I especially think the Chanel body art will fly because of similar, already existing tattoos on celebs like Nicole Richie. But we’ll see.

I did find a Body Art option that may be more appealing, and let’s face it, more chic than fake tattoos. And it’s brand new to Cincinnati!

It’s called Minx Cincinnati. And these will make you feel fabulous from your fingertips to your toes. Because, well, they go on your fingers and toes!

MinxCincinnatiAt the Progressive Shopping event we hosted up at the remaining Homearama homes tonight, I met the woman who’s “minxing” (as she calls it) here in Cincinnati. Her name is Veniece Hughes and she said this new type of body-shop-meets-body-art-meets-manicure uses a flexible custom polymer that is heated and applied to your nail.

Not only do the designs come in 170 eye-catching patterns and colors, they also provide a slick nail look that:

  • Requires no drying time necessary
  • Is perfect for “winter” pedicures because you can slip your shoes back on immediately after your pedi
  • Prevents chipped polish problems (Veniece said her Minx pedicures, $65, last 4-6 weeks and manicures, $45, approximately 5 days)
  • Has no toxic or harsh chemicals for application or removal

I absolutely fell in love and I want to have a “Minx and Mingle” party with my girlfriends! How fun would that be?! They had a really cute black and white polka dot pattern that I will be getting. They had houndstooth, zebra, cheetah and checkered print, too!

Enjoy the video below I took of Veniece explaining this new exciting “body bling” option we now have in Cincinnati. Check it out!

It’s Time to SALEabrate

I’ve got a fever and the only perscription is retail therapy.

That’s what I posted to my Facebook page this morning because the past two weeks have been busy, stressful and sleep-deprived, so I thought I’d treat myself to a short little visit to the mall. And some friends – who obviously know me and my savvy sale shopper ways – responded to my message on Facebook with various sales all over the city I need to check out. I thought I’d post a new blog to share the good news in case you’re out getting in a little retail therapy this weekend, too!

ShoetopiaShoetopia
Shoetopia announced that it will be closing its Northside retail store at the end of October. To clear the shelves, Jessica (the owner), is offering some huge discounts. Here’s a message she just posted to the Shoetopia Facebook Fan Page: “J-41 and Tsubo Fall shoes are now 25% off, Faryl Robin shoes are $100 off, and all summer shoes are 70% off.”

And just six hours ago, she posted this: “Wow, you are all so amazing! We’re almost out of Tsubo’s and J-41’s after only 2 days! It’s been so busy that I haven’t been able to keep our website updated, so if you want to know if your size is still here just stop in, we’ll be here all day until 8pm.”Forever 21 denim

So, all my sole sistas out there better hurry while the gettin’s good.

Forever 21
It’s jean season again, ladies, so stock up with Forever 21’s newly released $9.50 denim.

I used to loathe this store, so I understand if you’re questioning my sanity for shopping at Forever 21. It’s crowded, unorganized, the clothes are cheaply made, don’t last long, aren’t made for girls with curves and and their return policy stinks.

That being said, I consistently get compliments whenever I wear something from Forever 21. I used to think it was just for teeny-boppers, but I’ve actually found some of my favorite clothes – for work and play – at Forever 21. Plus I’ve found some things absolutely identical to items I’ve seen at Saks, Nordstrom and even Cabi parties. Little Luxury ShopSure, they won’t last as long as the expensive designer versions, but do fashion fads ever last that long anyway?

ADIDAS
All Day I Dream About Sales… That’s probably not what Adidas really means, but this weekend it does! The annual Adidas Tent Sale is taking place at the Turfway parking lot now through October  12 with blowout prices up to 75% off! Hours: Friday-Sunday: 9am to 7pm. Monday: 9am to 5pm.

The Little Luxury Shop
While I’ve never personally shopped at The Little Luxury Shop, it is based here locally, I do see it advertised everywhere and I’m on their mailing list. I just got an e-mail saying they’re doing 35% off right now if you use the code “luxury35” and that’s good until Oct. 31. The Web site Photobucketsays it’s a bikini and dress boutique. Their Little Black Dress section has some super cute stuff in it and some of their handbags are pretty yummy too.

Your Sale is in the Tote Bag
The Wardrobe in Madeira started “Tote Bag Tuesday” this month. Here’s the deal: Buy a $3 reusable tote bag and get 10% off your entire purchase. It’s only on the first Tuesday of every month, so mark your calendar for Nov. 3.

And on that bag-related note, also mark your calendar for November 27. It’s the annual “Holidays in the Bag” at the Gateway Quarter (aka Over-the-Rhine) retailers. Participating stores will offer 20% off everything customers can fit into a special Gateway Quarter shopping bag from 9am-9pm!  Proceeds benefit the Emanuel Community Center. Pick up your bag at the corner of 12th and Vine Streets and spend the day shopping for gifts in the one-of-a-kind, locally owned stores that line the Gateway Quarter.

I Think I Love Choo

Me: “I touched my first Choo. I think I love Choo.”

My Sister-in-Law, Melissa: “I love Choo, too.”

chooWell, I’m no longer a Jimmy Choo virgin. I have heard of these magnificent creatures, studied them online, but never been close enough to touch one. Let alone try one on.

But after last night’s gala at Nordstrom, I had the pleasure of meeting Jimmy Choo and all his soleful friends like Valentino, Nanette Lepore and Tory Burch.

They only had one pair left of the Choos you see to the right and let me tell you, they were a sight to be seen. They were as light as a feather and super comfy (according to Melissa, who had the Cinderella luxury of being able to perfectly fit in them). But I would have had to sell my car and walk home in them had I purchased them… they had a – get this – $1100 price tag!! I think that’s the most expensive pair of shoes I’ve ever touched in my life! But hey, a girl can dream.

Studs were everywhere. On clutches, ballet flats, even a beret! “What I Wore Today” called that trend long ago though. Good eye, Kasmira!

Speaking of fun fashion, I have a couple things I want to mention. This Friday (tomorrow, Sept. 25), Cincy Chic is hosting a Wearable Art fashion show at Sandra Small Gallery in Covington. I definitely encourage you to check it out if you want to see the latest fall fashions, with an artsy twist and cutting edge flair. (Check out the video below for a sneak peak of the fashion show)

Now, I am off to meet with Rihanna’s Stylist Mariel Haenn to talk about some hair and makeup trends that we can take from Tinseltown to the Tri-State. Stay tuned…
