4D Ultrasound at Becoming Mom Spa!

Wow. I can’t believe in a little over 10 weeks our little girl will be here in our arms. She’s been a few years in the making and it’s just unreal that she’s almost ready to make her big debut!

As you know, I’ve been practically living at Becoming Mom Spa during my pregnancy (LOVE that place) getting everything from pregnancy-safe pedis and prenatal massages to even finding out the gender early there! Well, we chalked up another special experience there this weekend when we got to see our precious baby’s face for the first time through a 4D ultrasound.

It took my breath away to see that black and white blurry regular ultrasound that you typically see on a small computer screen at your doctors turn into a 4D lifelike real-time window into the womb, projected on a big 40inch hi-def screen. For 30 minutes, we watched her wiggle, hiccup, squirm, rub her eyes, suck her thumb and even react when my husband started talking to her close to my belly. Unbelievable. As if that wasn’t great enough, we also got a CD and print-outs of our ultrasound images to take home and a DVD  recording of the ultrasound session so we could share the video with loved ones.

Really, really incredible. Looking back, our times at Becoming Mom have just made the experience and journey of being pregnant so much more enjoyable. From learning the gender early and getting a stuffed animal with the recording of her heartbeat inside, to seeing her face, hands and little movements in 4D… all of these things we wouldn’t have gotten at a regular doctor’s office… not to mention being able to enjoy spa services without worrying what kind of chemicals or products they’re using and if it’ll be harmful to the baby. It’s just been great. So if you know of anyone who’s preggo, definitely send them to Becoming Mom! It  makes “becoming mom” even more special! 🙂

Women’s Health Expo Recap!

I had SO much fun at this past Saturday’s Women’s Health Expo at The Phoenix downtown! We had more than 600 RSVPs and they enjoyed free mammograms, tasty (and healthy!) treats, a crossover fitness fashion show, free physician seminars, and 40+ vendors to shop with and learn from!

From Tennis to Tea, Turn It On Fitness Crossover fashions have you covered.
From tennis to tea, Turn It On Fitness Crossover fashions have you covered.

Here are a few highlights of the event for me… of course, the fashion show was awesome. The clothing was by Turn It On Fitness, which I blogged about a couple months ago here and we wrote about here in Cincy Chic. The line was created by former Ben-Gal cheerleader Juetta West and was designed by Project Runway star (and Dayton native) Althea Harper. The idea is that it’s clothing that’s functional enough for the gym and fashionable enough for everywhere else! The models in the show came out in pairs – one styled with the “fitness” look, and one styled with the “fashion” look – and it really helped to show how you could easily transition each piece.

Then, I stopped by to see “My Health Coach Zach” (we recently wrote about him here in Cincy Chic) who gave me great advice about tweaks to make to my nutrition to increase my chances of getting pregnant… shortly after his coaching, I got preggo, just sayin’! 🙂 He and I chatted about some things we can do to get my husband feeling better from his RA symptoms, and he suggested a new type of test he offers that can test for any food allergies that you may have. My husband’s RA tends to flare whenever he has gluten, so Zach was thinking maybe some other allergies might be flaring him up too! Apparently, they just take your blood and test it that way, which sounds easy and painless enough. So, I’m going to look into getting him that food allergy test asap!

Then, I ran into the gals from Owl Be Sweatin’. We’ve written about them a couple times in Cincy Chic, and they’re good friends of a friend of mine, but I had never met them before or seen their headbands in person before. Holy cow do these headbands work well! They’re adjustable, non-slip headbands made in a variety of colors and patterns. Because you can adjust them to perfectly fit you, you don’t get those headband headaches. And they’re only $16! What a great concept! Definitely check them out!

They were telling me about their “revolution” classes that they do that are a unique twist to spinning classes. Dark room, upbeat music, incorporating choreographed movements with super effective isometrics.  I used to be a Spin instructor a few years ago and I was in the best shape of my life when I was doing it. So, post-baby I’m definitely going to have to go check that out!

Make sure you’re subscribed to Cincy Chic to be the first to know about all our upcoming events so you don’t miss out on great ones like this expo was!!

Turn It On Featured in Women’s Health Magazine!

April issue of Women's Health where Turn It On Fitness is featured!
April issue of Women’s Health where Turn It On Fitness is featured!

What does Cincinnati, Women’s Health Magazine, fitness, fashion, and Shakira all have in common? Turn It On Fitness!

How, you ask? Well, Shakira’s personal trainer Anna Kaiser was featured in the April 2014 issue of Women’s Health wearing and raving about her Turn It On Fitness Speed Pant ($105), a new crossover fitness wear fashion line developed by two local ladies.

We wrote about Turn It On Fitness in Cincy Chic a few months ago here, and I blogged here about my Turn It On Karma top ($80). So, not to brag, but we totally broke this story waaaay before Women’s Health did. haha!

No, but seriously, this is SUPER impressive and I’m so proud of Juetta and Althea, the ladies behind Turn It On. This is just the first of many major publications that will be noticing your hard work and fab (and FUNCTIONAL) designs! Congrats!

Preggo Pampering at Becoming Mom Spa

Last month, I went to Becoming Mom in Mason for their “I Can’t Wait” Package where they can tell you the gender of your baby a few weeks sooner than you OB typically does. That’s when we found out IT’S A GIRL!! Woohoo!!!

So excited to have a “mini me” on the way! Can’t wait to go shopping and spa-ing with her. Well, technically I don’t have to wait. I already started shopping for her (my first stop after the ultrasound was buying her a pair of shoes! haha!) and I decided to treat myself to one spa service a month for the rest of my pregnancy (these swollen ankles aren’t going to relieve themselves!). I’m officially half-way through the pregnancy as of today, actually! Can’t believe it!

Of course, there are a billion spas in town (many of which I love love love) and some even offer prenatal services. But I didn’t feel like doing the homework on what products they were using and confirming that my service provider was trained in working with pregnant women (even if it’s just a facial — I didn’t want to worry about my facial using chemicals I’m not supposed to have on my skin, or that the esthetician will lay me in a position I’m not supposed to be in.)

I’m a worry wart about enough these days, so it’s just nice to book an appointment and know that whatever I need — a pedicure, massage or facial — will be with the safest products and people for my preggo pampering!

So, long story short, I booked all my monthly spa services at Becoming Mom as a little light at the end of the tunnel each month to give me something to look forward to! This month was a “Get that Glow” facial where they slough off all the dead skin and revive it with an all-natural pumpkin scrub. They also did a head, shoulder and hand massage, as well as a foot and leg rub. Soooooo nice. Next month? Prenatal massage! Woohoo!

“Turn It On Fitness” Crossover Fitness Fashion

The Karma Top, by Turn It On Fitness, a new Crossover Fitness Fashion line launched by two Tri-State natives.

In last week’s issue of Cincy Chic, we wrote about “Turn It On,” a new women’s clothing line launched by two Tri-State natives. It talked about how a former Ben-Gal Cheerleader and model, Juetta West, and Althea Harper, the runner up on Project Runway Season 6 and designer of her own fashion line teamed up to launch this unique “Crossover” line. It’s designed to take you from the gym to work or play (and everything in between).

Me with Juetta at coffee!
Me with Juetta at coffee!

Juetta reached out to me a few weeks ago saying she’s been a long-time reader of Cincy Chic… even once she moved to Hawaii several years ago!  I’ve been following Althea since her pre-Project Runway days, so I was so excited to read the Cincy Chic story about how she and Juetta teamed up to create this great new line. I was even more excited when Juetta said she would be in Cincinnati to do a few trunk shows to launch the line and said she could meet me for coffee!

Then, when we met, she came bearing gifts! She wanted me to try out one of their items – the Karma top – to let her know what I thought of it. The top features a loose fit with open draping back and open shoulders. It’s made of 92% Supplex® nylon and 8% spandex with moisture wicking and 4-way stretch (click here to learn about the unique kinds of fabrics they use). This top is $80 on their site, and their other tops start at $80 as well; the skirts at $90; the pants at $105 and the jackets are typically around $140.

I love my new Karma Top because I can throw it on with skinny jeans and jewelry and I’m ready to meet my girlfriends for cocktails. A blazer, dress pants and pumps for work. Or workout pants, sports bra and gym shoes for a good workout. Check out a few ways I’ve worn my new Turn It On Karma Top thus far in the pics below, and click here to check out Turn It On Fitness for yourself!

Important Message for Mommies to Be: GBS Awareness

I haven’t really talked publicly about this much, but for the past couple years my husband and I have been trying to start a family. It’s been a long and difficult path, and I’ll share the whole story about our journey soon. But I wanted to share some information with all the mommies-to-be out there because my Cincy Chic team recently connected with (and went to NYC with!) the local experts at Meridian Bioscience to learn about a special test pregnant women can get to detect some really important things you should know about your little baby bean before you give birth!

I guess their message hit me more since we’ve been trying so hard to just GET pregnant, and I couldn’t imagine putting its little life at risk when it could have been easily been detected by a simple test… which, as just the cherry on top, happened to be developed by local experts!! I was even just talking to Shari Goldsmith, our “Coach Shari” columnist on Cincy Chic about this GBS test, and she said her son actually was affected with that, and she wished she had taken the test! What a small world!!

So, I wanted to share an article that Meridian Bioscience wrote about GBS awareness and I hope you’ll share this with the mommies to be in your life! Have a great week with your family this week and happy holidays!

When Tests Get It Wrong

There are few things more devastating than losing a child — especially when it could have been prevented. The tiny lives lost each year from infection with Group B Streptococcus can be saved by screening and appropriate treatment.

But sometimes things go wrong.

Group B Strep (GBS) is just one of the many bacterial communities that colonize a healthy adult. GBS bacteria live harmlessly in somewhere between 20 and 40 percent of healthy women. However, when the bacteria are transmitted to a baby during birth, the newborn can become seriously ill. Fortunately, it is rare for an infant to become infected with GBS, but when it happens, it is all too often deadly.

Negative Test, False Reassurance
Stephanie Worthy was tested for GBS 33 weeks into her pregnancy and the test was negative. Her son, Jaxton, was born on the evening of December 7, 2011. He was completely healthy and sailed through all the newborn tests with high marks. Six hours later he was in neonatal intensive care for observation. Four days later he was dead. “They didn’t diagnose him [with GBS] for eight hours,” Worthy explains, presumably because her GBS test was negative.

RaeAnne Latimore also tested negative for GBS, at 35 and a half weeks. Her son, Blake, was born at 5:30 in the afternoon of January 6, 2012, one month after Jaxton Worthy was born. At one o’clock the next morning Blake was making strange grunting sounds and Latimore couldn’t rouse him for feeding. She became concerned, but the nurse reassured her that the noises were normal. Latimore insisted that they look Blake over in the nursery. Half an hour later the doctor came in to tell Latimore that Blake was seriously ill. At 8:37 that morning, “our little fighter gave up his fight,” says Latimore.  “They ruled out GBS because of my negative test,” she explains, but a nurse practitioner who had been on the team that tried to save him thought the symptoms looked like GBS and asked the pathologist to check for it in the autopsy.”

She was right. GBS infection was the cause of Blake’s death. “Testing negative doesn’t mean you are negative,” warns Worthy.

Better Tests
“False negatives can be a problem,” explains Amanda Smith, medical technologist in the microbiology department at The Pathology Lab in Lake Charles, Louisiana. “We were researching why even with patients who were getting good prenatal care, mothers who tested negative were sometimes delivering babies that were infected,” says Smith. In January of this year, The Pathology Lab switched from the old culture-based test to the illumigene® GBS test from Meridian Bioscience, Inc. because the molecular test is more sensitive, according to Smith. As more labs switch to the more sensitive molecular test, perhaps outcomes like Blake’s and Jaxton’s will become even more uncommon.
