12 Days of Seasonably Chic – Day 6

The Seasonably Chic Showcase is this Saturday! I can’t wait! And one of the things I really can’t wait for is the fashion show we’re going to have at The Phoenix. I don’t know if you’ve ever been at this venue yet, but it’s known for it’s “Beauty and the Beast”-like marble staircase. So, we couldn’t have a fashion show at the Phoenix without utilizing its snazzy staircase! We incorporated these steps into the show and it’s going to be FAB-U-LOUS!

Today we went on Fox19 to do a little sneak peek of the fashion show and I really can’t wait to see it all in action at the Phoenix this Saturday. The clothes will be done by Paris J Boutique, and jewelry by Serket Jewelry. Lots of gray, lots of sparkle, lots of panache.

Here’s the run-down of the day:
10am – open the doors to the public
11:30 – first fashion show
12pm – first brunch ‘n’ learn (gift wrapping tips with Poeme)
1pm – second brunch ‘n’ learn (holiday decor tips and trends with Sacksteders Interiors)
2:30 – second fashion show

The complimentary brunch ‘n’ learn food will be provided by Taste of Belgium, which is DELICIOUS! Click here to learn more about the Seasonably Chic Showcase holiday shopping event, which will take place on Nov. 7 from 10am-3pm at the Phoenix Downtown. 12 Days of Seasonably Chic – Day 7

We’re less than one week away from the Nov. 7 Seasonably Chic Showcase! Today’s sneak peek features one of my favorite people in this world, Karen Sacksteder.

Karen and I go way back. I went to school with her sons, so I know her personally, and now in the “real world” I now also have the pleasure of knowing her professionally. This woman has been through it all. Not only has she been in business for herself for more than 20 years, but she’s battled breast cancer, helped family members through breast cancer, and recently lost her husband. But she’s one of the most upbeat, positive people you’ll ever meet. In fact, in 2007, Cincy Chic awarded Karen the “Woman of the Year” distinction because of her ability to rise above challenges.

Not only has she been through a lot, but she’s amazing at what she does for a living: Interior Design. And one of her specialties is holiday decor! So, for the Seasonably Chic Showcase, we’re going to bring Karen in to do a FREE brunch ‘n’ learn at 1pm on Nov. 7 to talk about the latest and greatest tips and trends for holiday decorating.

The food will be provided by Taste of Belgium, so you won’t want to miss it! What a great way to kick off the holiday season! And check out the video below to get a sneak peek into some of the holiday decor she has at her NEW Kenwood showroom, and a little tip she has for sprucing up your mantle on a tight budget.

Gotta Yearnin’ for Yurman?

David and Sybil Yurman
David Yurman and his wife, and company President, Sybil

As an entrepreneur, I love hearing how business owners got their start and how they ended up where they are today. It’s usually a fascinating story with many twists and turns. I remember hearing about David Yurman’s last year and his story did not disappoint.

He grew up on Long Island with a humble upbringing. He first stepped out as a designer and business man selling little sculptures in his high school cafeteria. He pursued sculpting at NYU, but then got sidestracked (eh, it happens to the best of us in college) and he hitchhiked across the country to California where he found refuge in some beatnik artist colony. I guess that bohemian scene got old and tired for him, so he hopped on the new, hip bohemian bandwagon that was brewing in Greenwich Village back in New York. That’s where he met his wife, Sybil, who was also an artist. David and Sybil formed a dream team and focused on learning the marketplace for fine crafts and jewelry. In 1980, David Yurman, the brand and company, was established. By the mid-1980s, Yurman had made a name for himself with his cable bracelet. This style has become iconic and remains David Yurman’s signature.

Why, you ask, am I randomly sharing David Yurman’s story with you? Well, today is officially David Yurman day in my book!

The biggest selection of his jewelry that Cincinnati has ever seen – including the new 2010 collection that will be unveiled today – just arrived this morning to James Free up in Olde Montgomery. There’s a four hour David Yurman Trunk Show event (4-8pm) going on tonight that I strongly suggest you check out. There will be preferred pricing, which is awesome considering this stuff never goes on sale, and according to the James Free people I talked to, “Yurman starts at $200 and can go up into the tens of thousands.” So, no matter what your budget is, check it out. Could be a good time to start checking off your holiday list (there will be a ton of items for men and women).

I went up and visited James Free to get a sneak peak of the 2010 Yurman collection, so make sure you check out the video below of that. And here are some new trends you’ll see this year:Pendant

The Cable Gets Personal – The iconic “cable look” Yurman is famous for, now enables you to personalize with charms and pendants that can be interchanged depending on your mood and/or wardrobe.
Statement Necklace – The Cordelia Cable (my favorite piece!) is a bold silver necklace with cable ring detail and one simple pave diamond link. It’s simple and refined but bold and beautiful. The perfect pop to any LBD!
Ruby & Topez – These two colors are obviously the “it” colors for the 2010 collection. They appear in most of the new arrivals, from earrings and charms to pendants and chunky rings.

And here are the details about the show… hope to see you there!

Oh Baby

Best for BabiesThis weekend, my husband and I hosted a baby shower for my brother and sister-in-law, who are expecting a little girl soon. This is the first baby in our immediate family, so we’re all diving head-first into the deep sea of baby apparel, gifts, necessities and do-dads.

Through this process, I found a few local hotspots for baby bump bearers, trendy tots and mod moms.

My top pick has to be Best for Babies in Silverton. They have diaper cakeseverything from chic diaper bags (as pictured above) to the cutest toys and books. The company also keeps a well-updated blog and Facebook page, so link up with those to stay on top of everything new and adorable in baby land.

My second local favorite is for the shower host or gift buyer. I stumbled upon the “Diaper Cakes & Such” Web site via Twitter, and I fell in love! A local lady designs and develops these unique creations – mainly “cakes” and wreaths – made completely out of diapers. The best thing? Each of the creations can be disassembled and actually used! (Diapers are expensive, so you don’t want to waste them!) With a stop to Michaels Craft Store, you can easily make your own if you have the time and creativity, but – with all the time and creativity it took just planning the shower – I sure didn’t!

super-easy baby announcement card creator page on ShutterflyOne of the things that could have saved me some extra time was doing my shower invites on Shutterfly. I found this super-easy baby announcement card creator page a few days after my hand-made cards went out (doh!) so I’m hoping this discovery helps you instead!

Show Your “Support” For Bras with Flair!

brasI remember my mom used to always tuck my bra strap back up under my tank top or sleeves and say, “It’s not polite to have your bra showing in public.” Well, next Wednesday my mom will be witness to hundreds of bras – we’re estimating about 300 at this point – “showing in public” as they bedazzle Fountain Square.

Here’s the concept…

Cincy Chic asked organizations and individuals to decorate bras to raise awareness and funds for breast health. Those decorated bras are due today, Sept. 25. (Participants can drop them off at any Tri-State LA Fitness location.)

Cincy Chic will collect all donations and have them on display for the Bras with Flair on the Square event on Fountain Square, Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the following times: 7-9 a.m., 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-7 p.m. Attendees and passersby can visit the booths, sign up for a mammogram, get in the Lexus RiverCenter “Cash Cab” to win prizes and also cast their vote for their favorite bra. The top 10 favorite bras will be up for auction – to benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure – at the after party from 7-10 p.m. at the Hilton Netherland Plaza where you can enjoy “Ta-Ta-Tinis” and food specials.

From 12-1 p.m. on Sept. 30, a free bra fitting lunch ‘n’ learn will take place at the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. La Silhouette Lingerie Owner, Britt Cruikshank, will offer advice, expert bra fittings and certified post-surgical fittings for all attendees. E-mail or call (513) 721-2445 to reserve your spot!

Later that afternoon, a fashion show featuring the latest fall trends from Alligator Purse and Cincy Designer Shoes will be on the Square at 6:30pm. Click here to purchase tickets to the fashion show – 100% of the proceeds go to Susan G. Komen For the Cure! Watch the below video for a sneak peak of the fashion show!

But before these exciting events take place, be sure to send a “Ma’am-o-gram,” a special e-card message, reminding your loved ones to schedule a mammogram. (Click here to see an example.)

Last but not least… Cincy Chic and Locals on Living, an affiliate of the Cincinnati.Com network, partnered to provide one local breast cancer survivor with a $3,000 pamper package thanks to Lexus RiverCenter, Tuscany Spa.Salon, La Silhouette Lingerie, Cincinnati Playhouse In The Park, Fusion Studio, Soho Boutique, Pure Romance and Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse. Red Tree Cultivates Cuteness

There’s something about this crisp air that makes me just want to curl up with a coffee, veg out and enjoy the simple things in life. Unfortunately, I have bills to pay, a business to run and other things that frown upon curling up and vegging out.

I did however fit in an unexpected escape when I visited Red Tree Coffee Shop in Oakley the other day.

I went there for a meeting, and afterward I went to the counter to order a pick-me-up drink before heading out to my next meeting. The barista asks me if I’d like a large, medium or small and points to the example sizes on display. And that’s when I saw quite possibly the cutest things ever: Handmade coffee cup sleeves. They came in all different designs and they’re handmade by a local designer. I’ve never seen anything like them! At first glance, it looks like felt, but the sleeve and designs are actually hand-woven and hand-stitched! At only $9, they are well worth it when you consider all that time and effort, plus the eco friendly and cute-factor!

T-shirts at Red Tree

Wait, there’s more… I turn around and there’s an entire wall of adorable gift items. T-shirts, bags, cards, oh my! I grabbed my drink, and whisked myself away into a browsing bliss. Each item was so unique with simple, nature-inspired prints, modern cuts and soft, sustainable fabrics.

Then I discovered that there’s an amazing art gallery in the back of the coffee shop! It just kept getting better! (Their Web site’s event page has more info about their gallery exhibits)

I couldn’t stay long, but I was so pleasantly surprised to experience such an artsy oasis. I hope you find a way to treat yourself to Red Tree – a coffee shop that’s truly “branching out” … oh boy. I got carried away there.
