Half Off at Three French Hens

My friend Caitlin launched a new site call WouldURather.com. It’s kind of like Groupon, but they do two offers that you can choose from instead of just one offer a day.

Because I know how much you readers love fashion (especially drastically discounted fashion) I’m giving you the heads up about today’s deal.

For today only, they’re featuring Three French Hens. If you haven’t been yet, it’s a cute little gift and fashion boutique located in the heart of Hyde Park Square (I think they also have one in Ft. Thomas, or at least they did at one time). Some of the designer clothing/jewelry lines Three French Hens carries are: Mariana, Seasonal Whispers (also carried by Nordstrom), and Robin Steele just to name a few.

Caitlin gave me all the below info to share with you if you’re interested in checking out the shop on the cheap…

Consumers can save 50% at Three French Hens by ordering a $50 ticket for $100 worth of jewelry, or a $25 ticket for $50 worth of clothing.  Tickets can be downloaded and printed within twenty-four hours of ordering, and may be redeemed within thirty days.  This event runs from 12:00am until 11:59 pm on Monday, June 28th. There is a limit of one per customer, but you may order multiple as gifts.  You’re guaranteed to find something for everyone here; and if you don’t find that perfect something, simply call WouldURather for a full refund.

To take advantage of this one-time event with Three French Hens and to sign up for WouldURather’s email alerts, visit www.wouldurather.com.

Happy half-off Hen Shopping!   : )

Win a Wedding and Meet “My Fair Wedding” Host

David TuteraGetting married, helping someone plan a wedding, or do you just like to win free stuff? If you said yes to any of the above, keep reading.

As John Kiesewetter wrote about in his blog yesterday, David Tutera (hunky host on “My Fair Wedding” is coming to Kenwood Mall this Saturday. He’s coming as part of a big tour of WE tv stars across the country (we got the cutest celeb, I have to say). For this one-day only event on June 26 (12-6pm), they’ll have a bunch of national sponsors, and a bunch of local hand-selected vendors, doing demonstrations, offering discounts and giving away great prizes (like a KitchenAid mixer, $100 gift cert to NinaShoes.com, and a $1,000 shopping spree you can use at Kenwood Mall).

They will also have a fashion show featuring White House Black Market’s new wedding party dress line. I didn’t know WHBM launched this new collection, so I’m excited to see it up close and personal. Check out their limited edition bridal gown! I love love love it!

I did a video interview with a rep from Kenwood Mall to chat about this exciting celeb appearance and bridal event, so check it out!

And while I was planning this blog post, two more wedding-related items landed in my inbox. First one is a Bride’s Night Out with Snooty Fox, which looks super cute and fun. The second is news that the Cincinnati Art Museum is doing a fab wedding giveaway. Check out all the details in the press release below!

The exhibition will show the origin of bridal traditions in Western culture, how all the pieces of the wedding, from long trains to jewel-encrusted décolletés, came together, periods when the ‘traditional’ white wedding dress was not worn, colorful wedding dresses, an embroidered felt dress, and influential designers and contemporary artist’s conceptions of wedding attire.

Arranged around these gowns, paintings, photography, and installation pieces will provide visions of the weddings and social settings out of which these designs emerged.

Ulta Opening in Kenwood July 9

ultaA couple weeks ago I stopped into Dick’s Sporting Goods in Kenwood to get some new workout wear and noticed a “Coming Soon: Ulta” sign. My jaw dropped.

When I lived in Philly, Ultas were all the rage. They’re kind of like Sephora but mass-market with better price points. Hence the jaw drop. Things are about to get verrrry interesting on Cincinnati’s beauty beat.

Sephora and Ulta are becoming the Skyline and Gold Star of the beauty industry. Sephora is currently the leading retailer of perfumes and cosmetics in the U.S. and the second largest in Europe. With about 90 stores in the U.S. (and 400 in Europe), women love Sephora’s posh beauty emporium with a top selection of makeup, haircare and fragrances.

But in walks Ulta, popping up 331 stores nationwide. There’s now a new challenger in the ring. But, Ulta comes to the ring with a secret weapon: Customers can stop in for an increasing selection of high-end beauty brands, as well as (gunslinger pulls out secret shotgun) drug store goodies at bargain prices.

With the economic climate like it is, it appears Ulta is better suited to help their customers weather the storm, and still look beautiful. I’ve talked to many makeup artists who love some of the drug store brands. So, why pay more when you don’t have to? I think many Cincinnati women are going to be asking themselves this very question with Sephora on one side of Montgomery Rd. and Ulta on the other.

This new beauty mecca open its doors on Friday, July 9th. Its new home is at the Sycamore Plaza, 7800 Montgomery Road Cincinnati, OH 45236. To give their new clients a warm welcome, they’ll be offering free beauty products/services all weekend long including free makeovers, hair consultations and Dermalogica face-mapping. The first 100 guests to visit the store will receive a gift certificate with values ranging from $5 to $100.

Here’s the press release about the opening in case you want to know all the corporado details:

ULTA proudly uses Redken and CHI professional products and Dermalogica skin care in the Salon and Spa. Professionals are available for complimentary hair and skin care consultations to help each guest receive customized services and product recommendations to suit individual needs.

*********UPDATE: I’m told there’s an Ulta at the Bridgewater Falls Plaza between West Chester and Hamilton, as well as off of S Mason Montgomery and Deerfield road off the Fields Ertle Exit from 71. Not sure about those; I haven’t been. As a NKY girl, I don’t get up there much. But I do know that Kenwood’s store is going to be dangerously convenient for me! It’s right on my way home from my gym!*********

Madonna Launches New Line, Material Girl

material girl
The Material Girl herself, Madonna

They can beg and they can plead
But they can’t see the light, that’s right
‘Cause the boy with the cold hard cash
Is always Mister Right, ‘cause we are
living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living
in a material world
And I am a material girl

Bring back any ’80s memories? Well, Madonna’s “Material Girl” is bringing back the 80s in more ways than just a song. She’s creating a new clothing line called “Material Girl” with her daughter, Lourdes.

They’re launching a back-to-school apparel collection, and will also launch in various categories such as footwear, handbags and jewelry. In the Cincinnati area, it’ll be available at the Kenwood Macy’s.

I’m told apparel will become available (only in Macy’s) on Aug. 3, and will retail from $12-$40. They plan to launch a fragrance too in 2011. Hmmm… wonder what Madonna will smell like?! : )

I’m super excited about this because I love love love Madonna. It’s amazing that she has been such a huge star for such a long time! (Her arms are a little too muscley eek) But her sense of style has always been top notch because it’s ever evolving. Well, it looks like Madonna has evolved yet again, and has gone in the direction of her “Material Girl” 80’s roots (so the collection’s name is quite fitting!).

I caught wind of Madonna’s new collection yesterday and got the exclusive opportunity to share these sketches with you before anyone else could publish them! Let me know what you think, and which one is your favorite, in the comment section below! My fav is the floral print dress, but I do love the studded bag. I’d probably get both. But that’s just because I’m a material girl!

Meet Project Runway’s Althea Harper This Wednesday!

Althea Harper

I’m super excited to meet Althea Harper, the runner up from Season 6 of “Project Runway.” I’d feel sorry for her for getting the runner-up spot, but she seems to be doing juuuuuuust fine.

She launched her own clothing line, and she’s visiting select cities to showcase her collection – and Cincinnati is one of those lucky cities! (Click here for more deets) She’ll be at Paris J Boutique (in Montgomery near Carlo & Johnny’s) this Wednesday from 6-9pm.

Kourtney Kardashian in an Althea Harper color block dress design

Althea is actually from the area! She grew up near Dayton, and then she went to DAAP. She was actually just recognized at the DAAP fashion show a couple weeks ago, so she’s getting to see a lot of the Queen City lately!

Ever since I watched her on Project Runway, I’ve been following her on Twitter, and she’s really a great celeb to follow. You can tell it’s really her “behind the tweets” and it’s so inspiring to see her updating at 4 in the morning because she’s putting in the elbow grease needed to make her vision a success.

After all this time I’ve been following her on Twitter, I feel like I know her. But on Wednesday, I’ll actually get to meet her! I’m almost just as excited to see her designs up close and personal. I know she works with a lot of sheers, and Kourtney Kardashion was actually just spotted wearing a super cute color block dress that Althea designed.

Althea’s new collection will be at Paris J and so will Althea! Paris J will have wine and sushi there too… mmmm!

This is a really rare opportunity to meet a rising star in the fashion industry! I hope you can make it! She seems like a super nice gal! Check out the flyer below for more info:

*Thanks kelklump who commented on the blog and pointed out that the dress was worn by Kourtney not Khloe Kardashian as I had originally written… that’ll teach me to write a blog in middle of the night, running on brain fumes. : )

Shooter Chic: Jewel Hits Fashion, Fan Interactivity Bullseye

Jewel swag
Jewel Swag (signed copy of Sweet and Wild CD, media pass) Also pictured is the pin pad we used for interactive portions of the show.

As a good journalist, I have to tell you this upfront: I’m a Jewel fan.

And not just the “I know the words to ‘Foolish Games'” kind of fan. I’m a “I’ve been to every Jewel concert to come within a 200 mile radius of me, read all her books, and have every song she’s ever recorded memorized” kind of fan.

So when I got a press release about Jewel hosting an interactive concert, and the ability to see it here in Cincinnati, I jumped at the opportunity to learn more. I emailed the folks who sent me the release and they agreed to give me a media pass to take part in the event and write a review on it.

I had never been to an “interactive concert” before and the press release was scarce on details, so I tried to do some digging. I didn’t find much, but I did learn that the company behind this new concert concept is Velocity Broadcasting. This Pittsburgh-based company apparently has a bunch of high definition television networks and they produce and broadcast custom-made, multimedia TV in HD. So, say a pharmaceutical company wants to do interactive videoconferencing with all the Rheumatologists across the nation, they’d call Velocity.

Well, Velocity apparently decided to spread its wings into the music world. And Jewel helped them do that. (I couldn’t find any other artists that they did one of these interactive concerts with before Jewel’s, so I’m assuming she’s the first.)

So, here’s what they did: The night before Jewel’s new “Sweet and Wild” CD released, they had this virtual, interactive concert called “First Spin.” It was a launch party of sorts. People all over the world purchased tickets (they were around $100) through Velocity. You can actually still see Jewel’s promo video of the event at www.velocityboxoffice.com. The ticket price included the concert and a four course meal. Here in Cincinnati, the two locations to choose from were Mortons Steakhouse and Maggianos (I chose Mortons).

pin pad
Event Emcee and Jewel. Explaining how to vote via pin pad on the three outfit options.

I get there, and I’m greeted with a signed copy of Jewel’s not-yet-released “Sweet and Wild” CD. SCORE! Each guest got one as part of their ticket price. Then came the amazing food (I had crab cakes and filet minon… yum!) while we watched live behind the scenes footage of Jewel backstage.

An emcee of the event took us through her motorcoach, we met her puppy and saw where she writes on the road. Then the interactive portion of the event began.

We were given little pin pads. They looked like mini remote controls. Backstage, Jewel gave us the opportunity to pick her first and last song via vote with our remote controls. Then she went through her closet and picked out three outfits for us to vote on. (The little floral sundress I voted on won by a landslide!)

Then we got to do a 10-question Jewel trivia game using our pin pads. This was like crack for all the Jewel fans in the room. The prize – for the most correct answers and quickest response time – was an iPad signed by Jewel. The questions were tough, but I got 7 out of 10 right. Right after the game was over, the system tabulated results and live broadcasted who won. Jewel talked to the winner live, signed the iPad for her on the air and asked her which song she’d like her to play at the concert. How cool is that?

steel magnolia
Steel Magnolia singer and her yummy blinged out necklace

And just to give us a feel of the thousands of other people (the release said this had the potential to reach 165,000 people globally) tuning in to Jewel’s performance that night, they showed live feeds from locations around the world – from Canada and Australia to a big blogger party in Florida. It was so neat to know I was part of such a large group of Jewel fans that night, even though I was sitting in a small room of about 10 people.

Steel Magnolia was the opening act. The female signer was wearing a super fab necklace. Big, chunky and sparkly – as all good jewelry should be. : ) They were talented! The ladies at my table really liked them. I was too overwhelmed with anticipation to see Jewel… wearing what I voted for her to wear and play what I voted for her to play.

Jewel finally came on and it was euphoric. She was wearing the cute little floral number, oh and her guitar strap was lined with bullets – a trend I’ll now refer to as “shooter chic.” : )

shooter chic
Jewel and her "Shooter Chic" guitar strap

She played for more than an hour. It was in such crisp HD, I felt like I was there popping her bubble of personal space. But in reality, I was (at this point) sipping a cup of coffee and enjoying a nice piece of key lime pie in the comfort of a steakhouse.

She was performing live in Pittsburgh (actually in the same studios where Mr. Roger’s was filmed). And with this experience, I genuinely felt like I was there. I was skeptical about it at first. I wondered if it would essentially be like watching a pre-recorded Jewel concert on a cheap projector. Granted, I probably still would’ve gone.

But this… this was an amazing experience like none other. It was unlike any in-person Jewel concerts I had ever gone to, or any other music performance I’ve participated in (I’m married to a musician, so I’ve seen my fair share).

I left there invigorated. I knew I had just been to “the concert of the future.” It had every thing our society wants right now: immediate, on-demand interaction. I was so proud of Jewel for being the musician who made this forward-thinking performance possible. Not bad for an Alaskan girl who grew up in a one-room cabin!

Check out the video below I shot from the event. Gives you a good idea of how the room was set up! And click here to get her CD. Or at least see the must-have shooter chic outfit she’s wearing on the cover. She’s smokin’! Enjoy!

Summer Style Gala This Wednesday

Summer Style GalaWe’re doing a really cool event this Wednesday at James Free Jewelers to showcase all the hottest summer trends. Some of their jewelry designers are coming into town for the event, so you will not only get to see the styles but you can also meet the makers!

I also brought J Lee Rabiner with Doncaster Fashionistas, a private label clothier, into this event to dress models in the latest clothing fashions. My friends over at Tuscany Spa.Salon agreed to provide the hair and makeup on the models, and will feature this summer’s freshest hair/makeup trends as well.

James Free is doing 25% off nine featured designers, for four hours only (4-8pm) this Wednesday! I hope you’ll join me at this tres trendy event! It’ll be at the James Free Jewelers in Old Montgomery (9555 Main Street).

To rev up for the event, I got to interview one of the jewelry designers who will be featured at the event, Barbara Westwood. Enjoy this Q&A about her wearable art.

Tell me about your new collections for this Summer.
My collections are: Doors and Windows, Water, Clouds, Sky, Love and Horizons.

For “Doors and Windows”: Jewelry is a perfect metaphor.  What it represents cannot be seen or heard; yet it can be felt.  What it means is only known to the wearer.  It can be a reminder or a marker for transformations, beginnings, endings, realizations, direction, and decisions. Doors and Windows is a symbol for any of the portals of life

I’m introducing a new collection: “Horizons”
With each new edition in the one of a kind collections I am  reminded of how jewelry can transform even the quietest of memories and experiences.
One day at the beach I looked out over the horizon and found complete calm as I viewed this commom, yet magical line we all see. I asked how is it that this line merging earth and sky could evoke this feeling of  contentment and peace.

This is the kind of mystery and magic that inspires me to create.  This effortless feeling is what I wanted to capture in this collection.  Knowing that no words can really touch this, I brought forth this idea of calm by introducing a dividing line of diamonds between two different stones.  Although this is a metaphor I needed my own reminder that peace of mind is experienced within, and am happy to share this idea, as thought to form, with you my wonderful Collectors.

What are some big colors you’re working with for Summer?
Turquoise has been the most important color and gemstone I am working with this season.  Everyone just loves the color.

Be on the lookout for a new collection I have called “The Sedona Collection” using turquoise and Mexican Cuprite agate.
