Go Red with Red Lipstick!

Happy February! (Can you believe it’s already February?!) As you probably know, this month is dedicated to heart health awareness. But what you may not know is that cardiovascular disease the number one killer of women in the United States. So, being someone with a family history of heart disease and the publisher of a publication dedicated to women, I wanted to do something to raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association in February… but of course in a fun and fabulous way! : )

That’s how the Lady in Red event came about four years ago, and we’ve sold out each year! We even found a bigger venue this year – ADC downtown – and THAT sold out too! I couldn’t be more thrilled with the success and I’m counting down the minutes until the event on Friday!

I’m so excited, in fact, that I got some of my gal pal bloggers together at a local makeup studio, Brideface in Covington, so we could all learn how to “Go Red” with red lipstick. I thought it would be fun for each of us to find the perfect shades and then share what we learned with our readers!

So, here’s what I learned:

  • Use matte red vs glossy to keep mishaps (i.e., red lipstick on your teeth) at a minimum.
  • Line your lips with a thin lip brush and the lipstick, matting it into the lip. Let dry before filling in the rest of the lip. This will avoid the pigment “creeping” into the skin around your lip.
  • Use a blue base red lipstick to make teeth look whiter.
  • Blue base red lipsticks are more pinkish (like the bright pink lipstick that’s very en vogue right now)
  • Yellow base red lipsticks are more coral-colored
  • Despite popular belief, you can play up both your eyes and lips (like my photo!) On the eyes, she used a purple-y shade (Stiletto by Benefit) and a “Red Lizard” shade by NARS
  • There’s a lot of advice out there about finding the right shade for you. But Nancy at Brideface snubs most of those rigid rouge rules. She takes everything into account, such as hair color, skin undertones, eye color and even your outfit. She said my lip color was actually inspired by the bright coral color of my earrings!

It was such a fun and informative night and I can’t wait to wear my new red lip on the red carpet this Friday! Thanks to all the ladies – Julie, Tamia, Katy, Brock and Marsha – who took part in the glam “Go Red” fun! Check out all their blogs about the night too:
